Congratulations, you’ve survived the rollercoaster ride that was 2024! Whether you celebrated the end of the year with outdoor adventures, festive work gatherings, late nights with friends, or by powering through the holidays, one thing is clear: your skin likely feels the effects.

From cold weather and stress to electromagnetic waves, free radicals, and seasonal illnesses, our skin endures a lot. How do you know it’s taken a toll? Many clients I’ve worked with over the years have described sudden redness, flaky skin, dehydration lines, dullness, and even discoloration.

“But Jenn, how can I repair and prevent further damage, while still enjoying life?”

Great question!

The good news? The answer is simpler than you might think:

Listen to your skin.

Okay, maybe it’s not quite that simple. Let me explain. Here in Canada, adapting to the changing seasons is second nature. When it’s cold, we grab a coat; when it’s hot, we pull out the shorts. Similarly, our skin signals us when it needs adjustments. Over the years, I’ve had clients hoping for a miracle product that works year-round, only to discover that’s not realistic.

Some are lucky enough to have flawless skin no matter what they use—and yes, I’m a little envious!

For most of us, though, seasonal and life changes mean adapting our skincare routines. Here are five simple steps to help restore your skin to a healthy, glowing state:

1. Stay Consistent

Consistency is key, no matter your skin concerns. You wouldn’t expect a six-pack from hitting the gym once a week, right? Similarly, cleanse, balance, treat, and protect your skin both morning and night with products tailored to your current skin condition.

2. Exfoliate Properly

It might seem basic, but many people don’t know how to effectively remove dead skin cells. As we age, our skin’s natural skin cell renewal slows, causing dullness. For sensitive skin, I recommend a very gentle physical exfoliant once a week. For normal, combination, oily, or dry skin, combine a physical exfoliant (once weekly) with a chemical exfoliant (such as AHAs or BHAs) 1-5 times a week, depending on your skin’s tolerance.

3. Repair and Hydrate

This winter, prioritize hydration and soothing care. Incorporate a hydrating toner, a reparative serum, and moisturizer into your morning and evening routines. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid (hydrating), bisabolol (soothing), Centella Asiatica (calms redness and dryness), ceramides (restore hydration and reduce irritation), and tocopherol acetate (antioxidant Vitamin E). Enhance your routine with a weekly hydrating mask for an added moisture boost.

4. Indulge in Monthly Facials

If your budget allows, consider monthly visits to a holistic, French-style spa for facials, where the skin therapists can help reset your skin and complement your at-home care. I adore the “French Touch” approach since it stimulates circulation, promotes lymphatic drainage, offers gentle extractions, and delivers a truly relaxing experience. You’ll leave with radiant skin and more refined facial contours, thanks to specialized manual techniques.

5. Protect Your Skin

Live your life to the fullest, but don’t skip this crucial step! Protect your skin from further damage by applying SPF 30 sunscreen (or higher) to your face, neck, and décolleté. Sunscreen prevents sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and burns, while also slowing the aging process. Complement your routine with antioxidant-rich products to combat free radicals that cause fine lines, dehydration, and aging. And remember, healthy skin begins from within: drink plenty of water, enjoy antioxidant-packed drinks like green tea, prioritize sleep, and manage stress with self-care—whether that’s therapy, exercise, or a spontaneous dance party in your kitchen.

By following these steps, you can face the new year with confidence and glowing skin—and ready to embrace whatever 2025 has in store!
